ISTD-LOST 2019
GRIEF
The brief: Design a typographic work exploring the theme Lost. We expect you to investigate the widest interpretation of the theme from historical, cultural and global perspectives, drawing upon references to different eras, societies, social groups, generations etc. Be selective and discerning in your
interpretation. Your research will undoubtedly uncover a breadth of information – everything from the profound to the ridiculous. It is your job to consider the tenor of the communication. Is it a serious, forensic interrogation of the theme, or is it a little more light-hearted? Does it have a very specific/singular narrative drive or is it eclectic, fun and informative? Whatever the case, we would like you to lose yourself in this theme and create a typographic tour-de-force to please the eye and stimulate the brain.

Grief is a difficult subject for many and our society today doesn't really understand grief or how to deal with it. I wanted to shed a new light on grief and make it a subject we all talk about more, something we should learn more about. This goes through the stages of grief, this may not be how you grieve but these are the steps most of us go through. I think its really important for us to really understand what grief is and how we could help those who are grieving, as its looked down upon and almost brushed under the carpet today.
For the cover I created a rip right in the centre. I wanted this to be a powerful message of what grief is really like. Grief is a horrible process and anyone can experience it, I have before. It leaves a huge hole in your heart and I wanted to portray this through the rip.
Book pages:300 gsm card in both black and white Cover:180 gsm
I have banded the spine with cotton thread to give a thicker look to the binding which makes it stand out more giving a high-quality finish.
Just like the Kubler-Ross model I have included a graph which is shown throughout the book on tracing paper at each stage, which also allows you to still read the book. This also includes the page numbers.
I really wanted the type to have a powerful impact on the reader so by fading words like lost, blurring out nothingness it shows emotion through the type which again helps to to relate to the text.
When carrying out research for this project I received many touching quotes about grief and included some peoples experiences in my book following on from each stage.
I created inserts in the pages which revealed an acetate quote which again I took from real people from my research as these were really inspirational and explains what people many feel when grieving which will allow us to understand grief more.
