BORDERLINE
Dividing Lines - Etching series
Borders are synonymous with state power, sovereignty and national identity. They define both belonging and otherness. In the face of rising nationalism and the growing global refugee crisis, borders across the world are tightening and also unravelling. My work is concerned with the idea of Borders. I witnessed first hand the Mexico border when working in America last summer. This experience led me to read and research around the concept of borders and to develop this body of work. The watchtower became a defining image and symbol of restriction, violence and a lack of freedom. The intricate framework of the watchtower has become a metaphor to explore the idea of boundary, frontier, partition and the dividing line. The repetition of the black line that is seen throughout my work reflects on how a simple line can create so much conflict.
