// CONSERVATION AGREEMENTS - PERU
When communities have alternatives to unsustainable activities, they choose nature.
Conservation agreements are long-term interventions that produce enduring solutions for people and nature, with an emphasis on financial sustainability and sound governance. By promoting social structures and local empowerment, conservation agreements enable improved stewardship of key natural resources and help people pursue sustainable development options.
In Peru, 800 agreements were signed with settlers in the Alto Mayo Protected Forest to reduce deforestation. One of those settlers was Abdías Vasquez, a reformed illegal logger and this is his story.
