Live from the Moon

Live from the Moon
This typographic work titled Live from the Moon was selected for entry to the ISTD Student Competition in 2019.

Live from the Moon is a response to a call to explore the theme of ‘lost’. This typographic piece documents the loss and subsequent search for the original Apollo 11 moon landing footage. Presented as a series of six posters that join to form a whole, Live from the Moon details the time line of events: from the moments of the moon landing through to the realisation that the original footage was lost.

The narrative explores the key moments of the search and the compromise made in restoring the lower quality footage that was available. To supplement the narrative, original converted footage images were used.

Through the use of select typography, Live from the Moon nods to the early design aesthetics of NASA. This use of appropriate typography combined with a limited colour palette and imagery reflective of early technology, creates a piece that clearly expresses the theme of 'lost' in relation to the Apollo 11 footage.

A thorough process of exploration and experimentation in expressive typography was conducted in order to achieve these results. I tried multiple ways of distorting and segmenting the type through both digital and more analogue methods (moving printed text on the scanner while scanning). Following this, meticulous refinement was involved in ensuring that the layout and typography was impeccable.
