Boundaries - A Field Guide
For the course "Design, Culture and Society".
After visiting Wighawali, a small village near the southern cost of Maharashtra, and meet a few enthusiastic villagers, we were prompted to produce a field guide for the village, with topics to be chosen as we wished.
As a stranger to a new environment, it becomes difficult to understand a place you've never visited, all in two days, and then produce a guide book to any niche feature of the place.
Skills required - Good sense for details, finding hidden gems, abstraction of form to art, etc.
The topic I chose was the interesting ways the villagers created boundaries around their home. After talking to some villagers I got to know that they were such a tightly-knit family that they weren't afraid of keeping their doors ajar at night. So I was compelled to ponder over this quirky observation.
