NOT EVEN JAIL
This is one of my favorite typography project that I did during my college years. The brief was to make a good typography composition that suits the quote that we had selected.
I quoted a verse of a song by Interpol titled ‘Not Even Jail’. The song is about ones redemption and getting out from living a hard life. So the concept that I am going towards to is to make a composition of typography that is gritty and rough.
The process of design started with a pencil sketch to get a rough idea to make the design. And then I try to make a few compositions of typography and choosing the type of font I wanted to use. Afterwards I print the words ‘COMMIT’ and ‘VIOLENCE’ to an art carton and make a cut out of those words. To make it feel more grittier, I decided to make scratches on the word ‘VIOLENCE’.
After finished designing the fonts, I made a typographic layout on an asphalt road and take pictures of it. To apply drop shadows, I made a schedule of photo shoot to be taken sometime around 4 to 5pm so that the sun is not directly on top of the subjects. And then I edit the tone of colors and contrast on the post production stage and added digital fonts on the remaining words “I PROMISE TO’ and ‘NO ACTS OF’.
I got extra remarks because I was the only one in class that applied analog and hand made fonts rather than just using digital fonts.
