The Dome:
My research is to form a design experience for the Arataki visitors center. The historic and environmental visitors center wants people to engage and explore more of what Arataki has to offer, with its rich culture and conservational ways. In my project I want to explore the notion of verticality to show experience at Arataki. In my research I found that the backbone of the visitors’ center is not as visible and clear. Using materiality, I have created a space where vertical notions are shown. The use of glass allows the space to feel open, creating an indoor, outdoor flow between the building and my design. People would move from a lower space where they are immersed into the forest, to an upper space where they can observe the beautiful landscape as well as a middle space where they can sit, eat and enjoy the view. I analyzed the pou that sits at the front of the visitors’ center. In my design I want to connect visitors with the culture and the land as I extend Arataki’s observations where sightseers will be able to have a full embodiment of the site.
Models made using Rhino initially to be produced as a 3D model of my Dome structure.
Initial concepts in which myself and my partner (Becky Stansfield) explored spatial opportunities at Arataki for different types of people including tourists, locals and visitors. Looking at the cultural, ecological aspects of Arataki.
