SHROUD

This is a personal project inspired by the Japanese concept of 'Sabi': the inherent beauty of objects and materials as a result of decay, usage and the passing of time.

These are simple cloths that have been draped along the roadside to absorb water from the rockface. I'm interested in how they present themselves almost as works of art, each with its unique structure, texture and tonality. I find them beautiful and disturbing at the same time, like the paintings of the Italian artist, Alberto Burri. There is something strangely human and spiritual about them, a metaphor for our own impermanence and mortality.
