Future of Food Anthology - Editorial Spreads and Cover Concept
November 2019
Graphic Design 1
The Future of Foods is an anthology of essays selected by the GRPH 221 class of Fall 2019 discussing the future of foods both in the United States and worldwide. This anthology features scholarly articles, short stories, and much more. The goal of this anthology was not only to discuss what is in store for food, but to explore the lengths that editorial design can go. We were tasked to push the limits of legibility, text/image relationships, and visual hierarchy. We were each also asked to design a cover for the anthology so that one could be chosen for the final printouts.

For my initial designs I began with Helvetica and Swiss design as a jumping off point to explore text flow, illustration and visual hierarchy.
My objectives for this project were to explore the boundaries of editorial design and try many different concepts Since the article that I chose was almost a counter to the massive vegan movement, I decided to take inspiration from punk zines and counter-culture design pieces. This led me to explore duotoned images along with cutout color blocks and hand-written text for the title, subheads and infographic. Since the target audience for this anthology is mainly anyone who would be in the graphic design building, this youthful concept will be familiar and engaging.

The deliverables required for this project are:
    - Article layout in 2-3 spreads featuring:
    - 5 levels of information within the text
    - 1 infographic integrated within the layout
    - Citations for borrowed images
    - Iterations illustrating process behind layout design
    - Cover concept for anthology of essays
    - 3D Mockups of cover and layout designs
    - Creative brief describing paramaters of project

These deliverables were to be created and revised over the course of approximately one month and finalized by Thursday, December 5, 2019.
After creating and finalizing the layouts, I mocked up what the article would look like in print.
Following layout design, we were each to create a cover for the anthology, one of which would be chosen for the final products. For this design I returned to the Swiss style of design in some of my early iterations. This, I thought, would more neutral than the spreads inside.
Following designing the cover, I created a 3D mockup of what the front and back covers would look like as a final product.
