Amphibian Apocalypse

This set of sculptures is based on the approximately 501 frog species worldwide killed by the chytrid fungi (depicted on the right in the first image). All three pieces were made from standard's 182 stoneware. The small frog and fungi were reduction fired in a gas kiln with different glazes that would interact to produce the desired textures [copper red/green + mottled blue (frog) vs desert sage and wax resist (right)]. The large frog was decorated with sponged and layered underglaze and black engobe. All three pieces were fired to cone 6. One of the articles that inspired the piece is below...
