Tips to Help Dads Remain Present for their Children

Children benefit from having an attentive and caring father or father-like figure in their lives. While many fathers are physically present, they are often emotionally disconnected or distant when interacting with their children. This can be just as damaging as being absent. Many fathers are preoccupied with issues spilling over from their workdays, but to build better bonds with their children, they must work on being present.

Fathers should make an effort to make a distinction between work and home. In addition to following a transition ritual such as taking an extra walk before entering the house, they should avoid answering work-related emails or phone calls when spending time with their children. Another way to remain present is to simply have fun. Fathers can bond with their children over enjoyable activities such as sharing a book, cooking, or playing sports.
