In the Cold Light of Morning

'I thought it was a photo' is pretty much the best compliment anyone can give me. I never went to art school. I don't draw in a traditional way. I guess my approach is different because I take inspiration more from photography than traditional drawing. I look for powerful images, then I set a challenge for myself to recreate it as closely as possible. Lately I've been really interested in intriguing lighting setups, stark shadows and low key lighting. The truth is, I just want to draw stuff that I'd put on my wall. I've always been attracted to black and white photography. There's something about the drama only a black and white image can create.

This giant piece took 73 hours to draw with black Copic Markers on Strathmore Bristol paper. More details on my website: https://www.deanspinks.com.au/portfolio/in-the-cold-light-of-morning/
