INDESIGN WORKSHOP - GRIDS

IN DESIGN WORKSHOP - GRIDS
Today we started embarking on the workshops that will span the next two weeks. We have been briefed that we will be doing different things in each workshop to basically broaden our range of mediums, and offer us alternative ways of working that we may not have considered before. Today's workshop was In Design, which I know relatively well, but it was an extremely informative session that will certainly benefit me and make me work more professionally as well as working at a quicker pace.

We were taught how to use grids in the context of In Design, learning quick techniques of how to create columns and rows, grids and inserting text/images into text boxes. We made two mock up covers based on the penguin covers, and used grids to structure the layout. It was a really fulfilling learning experience, and I did enjoy the way that the lesson was structured because we were getting work done whilst learning new things.
I'm really happy with the way the second cover came out, because I used an image that I took during a shoot with someone that I know and used it as the stimulus for a hypothetical penguin cover. I enjoyed using the grid to guide me but still break the rules slightly and create a design that I think is really interesting and looks good. The colour combinations are subtle but create a whimsical aesthetic which I like.

Following these experiments, we were quickly taught how to construct a magazine layout on In Design where if you were to print it you could fold it into a small zine. We used the process of our hybrid project to create a 10 page zine, which was another fun experience that allowed me play around a bit composition wise. It was also nice to sum up the hybrid project within the context of a zine. It made me realise the importance of documenting all your work throughout a project because when you conclude it you can build on from it again, refining the best work and creating something new. I think that is what the creative process is all about now, which pleases me because I feel as though my mindset towards the way I work is now starting to mature; the way I am thinking about things is different now. I feel like my relationship with the course is now starting to grow stronger, because I understand things that I didn't understand before and it has made me feel a lot better.
