Letterpress Sketchbook for Calligraphy

The Name
"Baskerville ke Kutte" literally translates to 'Baskerville's dogs', which is a play on words of the famous Sherlock Holmes tale 'The Hounds of Baskerville'. The font used for setting the letterpress was also Baskerville.

What
A sketchbook that I made for myself for calligraphy, with a cover that has letterpress type on it.

How
I first bound the sketchbook, and then pressed the type to make many potential covers. Then, I cut and glued the cover to the text block.

Why
I used coated white paper for this project to make a calligraphy book for myself. It was also my first time using a letterpress machine.

Where
I did this personal project using the rotary letterpress machine at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.

When
Created in January, 2020.
(above) I bound the sketchbook signatures using the kettle stitch method.
(above) I applied glue to the bound book to solidify and strengthen it.
(above) I gathered different colors and thicknesses of papers for the letterpress.
(above) The typeset for the cover. I used a rotary letterpress machine.
(above, below) The different covers that I made with letterpress. I used two inks – transparent ink for a deboss effect, and copper ink.
(above) Cutting the letter-pressed cover to match the book size.
(above) Pressing the book beneath heavy objects, after fitting the cover.
