BEYOND THE OAK - GRAPHIC NOVEL

BEYOND THE OAK
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

The first step for character development was to observe three people and briefly get to them. So I interviewed and observed three people's body language. After this, I developed the following three characters: Ezekiel, Hesper and Xavier. The purpose of studying three people was to learn and understand how each person has a unique identity, behavior, reaction and action. The second step was to carry forward some part of the three personality into our characters and develop them in a unique way. In order to understand my characters better, I detailed out their personality, background, likes, dislikes and traits. This helped me understand and know what kind of character they will be and in what way they will react or act.

After studying the person above, I developed Ezekiel who is the antagonist in my graphic novel. Ezekiel is an impulsive character with an obsessive behavior. So to highlight these traits, I gave him disheveled hair and wide eyes with a grin. It was my attempt at making him look obsessive and impulsive driven. He is a druid and as known druids are wise, philosophical and composed so his impulsive behavior is a contradiction to his social status he is born in.
Hesper is the protagonist in my graphic novel. I chose to give her an innocent look because her character usually likes to use her young age as a facade to hide her real identity of being a protector. Her duty is to guard the Pandora box without revealing her true identity. So she owns a shop as a cover up.
Xavier is another protagonist in the graphic novel. He is a mysterious and observant person. The reason for giving him a serious look and casual black and grey clothes is to highlight his mysterious, reserved and observant nature. He tends to keep to himself. Hepser and Xavier are siblings and so Xavier too, is a protector of the Pandora box with a fake identity of a pocket watch maker as a cover up.
