Still Life
[Charcoal on paper]
80"x 180" Still Life
This project began with simply the intention of challenging myself in the aspect of scale. I wanted to cover a wall, by rolling out an absurd amount of paper and problem solve my way through the drawing. This drawing was not only large in the sense of size but also in regards to time. So inevitably, (as the room I was observing was a public studio) objects and sometimes entire walls were shifted in and out of the room. Initially I fought these changes, moving objects back to their original locations trying to keep my drawing as loyal to the present state of the room as possible. As the piece moved into its later stages I realized that despite my efforts to prevent it the past changes of the room slowly and subtly worked their way into the drawing. So I decided to embrace it, and continued to allow moments as such to work itself in.
The result was a drawing that not only described the still life, but also the 3 weeks I spent in that room.
