Aerosol paint on White stoneware clay and chocolate coins, 2017

As part of a collaborative work with Whampoa residents for the "In An Echo We Remember exhibition (2017)", each student artist pairs up with an elderly resident to create an art piece that pays homage to their most valuable object. I paired up with Mdm Joyce who's object was 2 old Singapore $1 coins that are no longer in production. These coins were precious to her as they were given to her by her old boss, Mr Wong, who treated her kindly, as such, I decided to focus on her relationship with Mr Wong due to his impact in her life.

Wong-San is part 1 of the 'San' series. It consists of a fired white stoneware bust with a silver paint finish of Mr Wong, the former superior of Madam Joyce whom I have collaborated with in the making of this project. Being no longer in touch since the 1980s, the bust is sculpted based on her description of him being plump and bubbly. The sculpture serves as a commemoration in remembrance of their relationship. Additionally, it doubles as a coin bank, thus, displaying it to be surrounded by gold chocolate coins allow viewers to relate the coins back to the work.
