The romance of castles in the British Isles and throughout Europe stimulates the imagination of most of us.
No matter how much we learn about the true origins of our great stone towers, the magic they hold for us never diminishes.  Standing amongst the ruins in a field,or before a lofty building in northern Spain, we are transported into another world and time. Partly created through the work of scholars and partly by our longing for something which we feel is lost forever. But there is adarker side, these fortresses were built for the protection of the medieval barons and to underline their control over the land.
Today we remember the great architects of more recent centuries and honour Nash, Wren and Vanbrugh for their works, but who remembers the extraordinary men who were responsible for the mighty military edifices of earlier days -  Maurice the Engineer, Richard of Wolverston and the mighty James of St. George and many others for whom these ruins stand as silent monuments.
