Due to the constant time shifts, all of the Alisons share an element of orange as a follow-through.
Orange was chosen, as it has the same visual impact of yellow, but compliments the warm tones
of the house.
Adult Alison: The real Alison Bechdel is a self-proclaimed minimalist; to honor that, Adult Alison is
wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans in the signature color.
Medium Alison: To illustrate Medium Alison’s uncertainty and insecurities with herself and her
sexuality, the key element to her costume is the use of layering as a way to hide and protect
herself.
Small Alison: Due to her active, tomboy nature, Small Alison wears a simple orange knit top,
jeans, black sneakers, and her barrettes.

Bruce is a cultured man of refined taste, and always looks clean and put-together in both
casual and formal attire.
Helen: As a working mom, coupled with the responsibilities of maintaining the Fun Home,
Helen is a woman on the go whose wardrobe can be described has utilitarian and practical.
Christian: The oldest of the Bechdel boys, he is generally seen with a polo and pants. When
there are visitors to the home, he puts on another layer such as a blazer or a sweater vest to
look more formal.
John: The youngest of the Bechdel children, John follows the same style guidelines as
Christian. He’s commonly running about the house with his shirt and corduroy pants with the
suspenders trailing loose behind him. When guests arrive, he also puts on an outer layer to
appear more formal.
