Human Centered Design: Prototype Proposal

Project 3 Step 4
Function Description:
The prototype is a nail polish bottle for a brand that supports at-home nail care and beauty. The bottle is specially designed to make the process of nail painting easier for the common man or woman. By completely redesigning the brush handle of nail polish bottles, the company, SJWN, successfully created a component that provides control and stability of the entire brush. By increasing the size of the handle so that it fits in the hand naturally and weighted to keep hands stable but not tired, anyone can achieve a smooth, opaque coat of nail polish after one stroke. The brush is specially designed so that painting an entire nail requires only one stroke. The bristles pick up just the right amount of polish so that there is no need to dip back into the bottle after polishing each finger. The bristles also hold the polish all the way up the brush, this keeps from clumping at the bottom and flooding the nail bed. With the SJWN nail polish brush, achieving a smooth coat while using less nail polish is finally possible.
SJWN is dedicated to making healthy nails and cuticles. The polish is made with all-natural and organic ingredients that strengthen nails and stimulates nail growth. The constant reapplying and removing of nail polish is what weakens nails that leads to breaking and dry cuticles. SJWN’s polish is gel drying which means it dries to a gel without the need for a harsh blue light. Manicures will last for three weeks without chipping. The nail polish also requires no clean up because it does not stick to cuticles. The polish will roll off the skin and dry only on the nail bed.
Aesthetic Description and Justifications:
The visual look of the SJWN bottle is glass with the logo repeated on the front side. The handle is covered in a white marble coating, though its actual material is silicon. The silicon is smooth and hard to the touch, much like a bike handle. The shape of the handle is organic and meant to fit perfectly in the grip of an adult hand. The handle has these particular qualities to provide control and stability while painting. The bottle of the nail polish is made of transparent shatterproof glass with a glossy finish and features the SJWN logo on the front. The transparent bottle means the color of it changes depending on the polish that it contains. The prototype has these qualities to ensure durability while maintaining the look and aesthetic of the brand. The nail polish itself, found inside the bottle, does not have any smell and is liquid. This special nail polish does not contain the harsh chemicals which emit odors that the other polishes on the market do, naturally SJWN polish is scentless so the creator decided to keep it that way.
Materials Description and Justifications:
The primary structural materials that will be used to form the prototype are glass and silicon. The two structures of the prototype are the glass bottle and the silicon handle that the brush is also attached to.
The glass will be used for the bottle to hold the nail polish. To make the glass bottle a glass mold is necessary. The bottle also features the logo that will be stamped on with white paint. The final material needed for the bottle is the glass coating that seals the painted logo and prevents the glass from shattering when dropped or hit. After completion, the bottle will be sleek and sturdy. It will be a cube shape and completely transparent except for the logo on the front of the bottle which will be in white. The only case in which the logo won’t be white is if the nail polish it contains is so light that one could not easily read the logo. In that case, the logo will be in black.
The second half of the prototype has many more parts to it. The handle is uniquely shaped to fit comfortably in an adult hand. Like the glass mold, the handle mold will require personalization by the brand. Once shaped, the handle will be slightly weighted to add more control over each stroke. It will then be dipped in a Calacatta marble-esk paint then in a final glossy coating to protect the handle from wear and tear. The brush is also a part of the handle and won’t be visible when the handle is screwed on to the bottle. It is centered in the handle longways. The bristles are held together with a wire, glue and a holder. They have a curved top, and the brush is wider than most nail polish brushes but thinner than most too. It is made out of synthetic bristles. The brush is made this way so that it takes fewer strokes to get one full coat. This also makes it easier to achieve smooth manicures in less time with less nail polish wasted.
Research
Pictured above are all of the main visual components of the prototype.
The first picture is of calacatta marble, which is how the handle will be painted. The middle picture is the Logo that appears on the bottle. The last photo is an example of how the bottle will look, translucent and square.
A potential color scheme for the brand.
