Empire of Opposites

Empire of Opposites Book

My goal with this project was to create an interactive book. I chose the topic of pagan and Christianity stories. I chose this topic because I found the research very interesting and fun to learn about. An interactive idea popped into my head right away. I wanted to use the pages to create layers/ cutouts of more pages. I began to research stories and found a few in each genre that had a main key item within their story. I took these items, and created cutout layers to show the similarities between the different stories. I then took the typography and also cut them into different pieces and layers. The reason I did this with the type is to correlate with the images. Each type is one letter but because of the way its cut it could look or be used as a different letter, like the stories reusing similar ideas even though they are years apart.
It also plays into the thought of similarities. The letters are similar, yet completely different, just like pagan and Christianity stories! Looking at it in a glance they are very similar, but when you get a closer look you start to see and understand the differences.

I chose my color scheme and illustrations because I wanted to try and create a more illustrative book design. I drew each illustration, getting inspiration from the art of that time. I used tracing paper to make changes and correlate both stories. Next, I took the illustrations into Photoshop and colored them. After the illustrations were complete I had the task of figuring out how to place them on a page in a way so they would match out when cut up. Overall I like the outcome of this project and enjoyed creating it.
