Joy the Elephant, Houston Zoo

This is a personal project inspired by a mischievous baby elephant named Joy who was born to mother Shanti at the Houston Zoo on July 12, 2017. On one of her first days out to meet the public, she managed to scoot and tuck her tush under a small fence and ran between the two small barrier fences. There is a fun video on Youtube of her grand escape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQjHd93S1RA

There were many births that summer at the Houston Zoo; so I imagined Joy escaping in a bat costume gathering up all the other babies to trick or treat after the zoo closed for the night. I would love to create a book named "Joy and her Super Batty, Zoo Boo Trick or Treat Adventure!"

Last year before her second birthday, Joy became very ill and the team of elephant care givers and her elephant family saved her life. I decided to send a little cute care package with a card, buttons and stickers decorated with mischief labels.

I created this illustration in Adobe Illustrator. The flat style of the design makes it easy to make outfits for Joy, a digital version of the old fashioned paper doll.
