The dissertation analyzes memes as a growing visual narrative tool responsible for social change. It looks at what constitutes as a meme, the origins of the term, the visual communication formats, the channels through which memes are spread and the structure of their evolution. It further studies some significant memes that had major consequences on society in order to understand the factors constituting to the influence of those memes. As a result, the conclusions are visualized and a social campaign is designed based on those conclusions to initiate communication on those social issues through memes.

My innate interest in parallels of social change and design has always been reflected through my academic projects. I explored this theme further during my final studio project as well at Hochschule Anhalt, which was about how to induce empathy in people in order to make them take action for social awareness'. This project later directed me towards looking at Memes as a tool for social change when I realized that I started my journey into philosophy due to a meme about Franz Kafka's novel, The Metamorphosis.
