I’ve created an edition of George Orwell’s 1944 novel, Animal Farm using hand made, photographed, expressive typography to accompany the original text.

Using typographic hoof prints to evoke the inequality of the society created by the animals after the revolution I’ve tried to depict the violence and squalor forced upon the lower class without showing the animals themselves. Physical prints were made in mud and paint and photographed on different surfaces to recreate the class system of the story. The pigs and humans walk on lush red carpet while the lower class are confined to the mud.

Shown here are images and spreads from chapter 9 (Boxer’s Chapter).
